 Speaker Enclosures

Most Factory or OEM In-vehicle sound systems are fairly basic in design and utilize speakers which provide average sound reproduction of the music being played.  These systems use the doors, dash, or rear deck as the speaker’s enclosure.  If you are looking to upgrade these speakers to get better sound quality or to replace defective ones, a good quality aftermarket speaker will accomplish this.  If you’re more of an Audiophile and want to achieve a listening environment where the vocals and instruments sound as close as possible to what the recording engineer intended, then replacing the current speakers with high quality speakers or adding a custom enclosure to house the new speakers and possibly an amplifier are the ticket.  Either way, R.T. Grim Electronics can hook you up with a sound system you’ll be very happy with.

Speaker Styles

Dual Cone

A single speaker typically composed of two cones or speaker surfaces, which handle the entire frequency range for which it was designed (normally 25 hertz to 20,000 hertz).  These speakers are typically found in most factory stereo systems.  Their ability to reproduce the entire frequency range efficiently and effectively is average.

Coaxial or Two-way

A speaker composed of larger speaker cone for low-to mid  range frequencies and a smaller speaker or tweeter for higher frequencies aligned on the same axis.  A simple crossover network is attached to route the proper frequency signals to each speaker.  It is essentially 2 speakers in one, each responsible for producing a different frequency range giving them much better sound reproduction than the standard Dual Cone speaker

Component Set

You will get the best sound quality with a component speaker set.  The set includes a mid-bass / midrange speaker, a separate tweeter, and an external crossover network.  The external crossover network allows for a smooth transition from the mid to high frequencies.  A smooth transition at the crossover point will improve the overall frequency response and your overall listening enjoyment.

Types of Enclosures

Vehicle specific Pre-fabricated

These enclosures are color matched and shaped specifically to fit in the vehicle they are designed for.  They are typically located in the drivers and passengers kick panel.  They are designed to house a mid-bass / midrange speaker,a tweeter, and the crossover network.  By locating the tweeter* and mid-bass / midrange* on the same baffle and angled toward the driver and passenger, the sound of both reach your ears at the exact same time. This eliminates acoustical problems that can result from having speakers in different physical locations on the same side of the vehicle – such as when mounting the mid-bass / midrange* in the door and the tweeter* on “A” pillar.
